New article on the subject in yesterday's Erlanger paper: < http://www.nordbayern.de/essen-trinken/brauerei-guide/zahlen-brauer-einen-hohen-preis-furs-gunstige-seidla-1.2267339 > Rittmayer (Hallerndorf) have invested 3.5 million € in a new brewery "at the edge of the village". Whether this is separate from the bottling facility across the highway from the village is not clear to me (which was built in 2000 for 4 million DM, and 30 breweries have their beer bottled there). Investment pays off in energy savings: the old brewery used 2 liters of oil to produce a hectoliter, the new one WOULD require 0.4 liters if it were to use oil -- wood pellets are the new energy source. ObSheesh: Note that the webbie link to Rittmayer ("eigene Brauerei") actually leads to the WRONG Rittmayer, the one in Aisch. There we learn that they'll be in Urlaub from 13 Aug to 3 Sep, however, so this dumbness on the part of the newspaper does serve some purpose. Markus Raupach, author of the "Frankens Schönste Bierkeller" guidebooks, also has quite a bit to say, including sobering figures of breweries in Franken: there were 380 in 1992, 287 in 2010, and 10 more have closed since then.
