Don, I have heard this before, but the problem remains finding these "well-made beers" since the beer fan sites seem focused on only the latest extreme beer and/or semi-unattainable foreign rarities. Before a trip to the US a year ago, I asked for some recommendations (from local people). The results were slightly less over-hopped beers and some bland, but balanced beers. Certainly in Franconia one doesn't need a list of secret pubs or breweries that produce balanced beers. I've also been victim to an opposite trend: the fantasy "quadrupel" beer style is represented as a sugar bomb. No hoppiness at all, but sweet enough to set your teeth on edge. None of this is to say that well-balanced beers don't exist in the US, but how are visitors supposed to find them?
