Four Breweries Closed by Health Department

Virtually the exact same thing happened several years ago in Belgium to the lambic brewers. Some of those breweries were 100-150 years old and not up to the demands of modern hygiene. The government proposed to shut them if they didn't fix the problems. However, in that case, there was quite a bit of protest and there was ultimately a satisfactory conclusion: the breweries were considered of historical worth and that let them out from under the modern requirements. As I recall, at least some of the protests came from citizens - not only the breweries. Perhaps there is a lesson here for the German breweries.
