Rauchbier recommendations.

Can confirm some of Gerhard's posting. Tasted the Weyermann Schlotfegerla during the visit to the maltings (great morning) and it was really good - nothing like so smoky as Schlenkerla (but what is!?), like most of the other rauchbiers, the smoky quality is more of a 'residual' taste and doesn't dominate. Likewise the Drei Kronen and Hartmann beers - very pleasant, though I'm not so keen on the pub/restaurants, not my kind of places. The Kundmuller is also worth sampling and, if you can't get out to Weiher, a short walk to the 'Boothaus' long the river is highly recommended. Re Andi's zoigl: I don't think that I actually realised that it was a smoked beer while I was drinking it! It is not a prominent taste, nor does it taste like any zoigl that I've had here. I did ask Andi about the name when we were in the old Beck's place (I had drunk quite a few at the time!) and I think that he just grinned and said something like it was just a bit of a marketing idea, nothing serious. He knew all about zoigl and didn't claim that his was in any way authentic. But, in the end, in my view (and that of the people I speak to in Eschawo), zoigl is an concept more than a type. It's to do with the concept of the kommunbrau and way the the stub'n operate, etc.
