Hobby- vs. Hausbrauer (Zoigl)

Talking a few nights ago to one of the helpers at the forthcoming Haus- und Hobbybrauertage. Apparently, this event is held in different European locations each year (last year in Belgium?) and attracts a lot of people. Although tagged as being in Neuhaus, there is no building in the town big enough, so events will take place in the Volkschule in Eschawo! These consist of lectures and workshops on home-brewing, no doubt with a little sampling! The only stube open that weekend are Bahler in Neuhaus and Schlosshof in Eschawo. No doubt the Alle Neuhauser Stub'n Tag has been planned to coincide, though this event has been held for the last few years. As a matter of interest, I asked one of zoigl-stub'n owners why the Eschawo event wasn't held anymore (think it was Anton Heinl). He said that it wasn't worth the trouble just to open for one day - not financially worthwhile. As regards the profitability (or not) of running a stube, Gloser sold 2,400 litres of zoigl in 4 days during a hot weekend a few weeks ago. This was thought to be exceptional, though I'm sure Robert Binner quoted a similar figure a couple of years ago. Incidentally, the capacity of both kommunbrauerei is around 2,500 litres. At €1.70/seidle, you can work it all out for youselves. To put this in perspective, when I was running a pub in England nearly 30 years ago, my weekly takings were around £2,500 but our outgoings were a lot higher than a z-s, where zoigl costs only around €.30/litre including tax. Not surprisingly, all the z-s owners have other jobs!
