Now been in Eschawo for a week and enjoying life just as much as ever. Roud'n was in good form last weekend, as was Teicher in Neuhaus. Then, of course, we had the mid-week venues: first, Loistl, with its much darker zoigl with a 50/50 Munchener/Pilsner split, as friendly as ever. Then, on Wednesday, it was the Weisser Schwann Stamtisch, with zoigl expert Ludwig and wife Renate, and several more, including the amazing Norbert, leader of the Feuerwehr Band, a recreation of fire brigade band of the 1920s. Norbert is an amazing charactor, trumpet player, raconteur and satyrical columnist. There was a great effort at improving our Oberpfalzische dialekt but not with great results. More interesting for this forum was the zoigl, which is brewed by Robert Sperber of Binner. Normally, this would be a conventional Windisch 70/30 brew but this week it was very Neuhaus like, probably 90% pilsner malz. Very tasty. Interesting to comparing with the zoigl in Robert's own stube, which we sampled on Friday - standardish Windisch style but very good. Oh, yes, also had a quick visit to Zum Posterer, which is not our favourite, as the zoigl always contains an excess of CO2. And it did - again! Rumours for survival of this stube are not so good, due to family problems. Had a trip with our convivial host with the appropriate name of Charly Kellermann to Falkenberg yesterday (Saturday). We added another 'secret' zoigl venue, Der Rote Ochse, which is a lovely 12th century inn. The waitress assured us that the zoigl was their own brew - whatever, it was pretty good, in much the Windisch reddy/brown munchener/pils style. Then headed across the road to Schwoarzhansel, which is newish. A bit lacking in charactor compared to Kramer but an excellent zoigl in the Neuhaus pilsner style and excellent and really cheap food. Tonight, it's Kack'n, where I believe that Mark and Jim had a pretty good time. May be celebrating or drowning sorrows!
