York == Bamberg of Britain?

I was being slightly tongue in cheek. The only comparison between Bamberg and Manchester is the fact that both towns preserved a sizeable slice of their indigenous brewing industry. You can't say the same for York, Birmingham, Liverpool, London or, as far as I can see, any other British town. Glad to hear about the improvement in Newcastle, as I recall it being a vast beer desert. Recall being taken on an exclusive trip round the Scottish and Newcastle Brewery many years ago - it was really like going round any other huge industrial complex. But, they were able to brew good beer, as a fairly lengthy post-trip spell in the hospitality suite proved! They were brewing Theakston's bitter at the time and the difference between the 'cask' version available in the brewery and that keg stuff served around the country was amazing.
