Kalt in Europa

As of this morning's TV news, "hundreds" of people in Eastern Europe have died from the cold, and six in this country. Our heat and hot water was out yesterday morning (Fernwärme -- not sure how to translate that exactly: 80°C water piped from the city to our radiators & flooring and to a heat exchanger to heat our water to 60°C so it was a cold shower before work). Haven't got an answer as to what went wrong, except that there were reports of lots of heating system failures on the radio. Was -6°F, colder than I've had to deal with since escaping Minnesconsin in 1993, and I've had a "nose-full" of it now. The long-term forecast is not promising. We didn't move here for the weather, nor for the beer. WTH am I doing here? Coincidentally, we're planning our first trip to the US (Oregon) since 2006 for early April.
