I visit or work since 1980 at the Sandkerwa. The locals say: You have to work or leave the city! The locals have a love-hate relationship! The locals prefer the first and the last day (thursday and monday). in this year from Thursday, 22th August to monday, 26th August. The Café Abseits has a small stand with Huppendorfer Vollbier. The Brewery Grasser has paid for a video about one day of the Sandkerwa: http://youtu.be/tpzCCL7YPIE You can taste many different beers. But it isn't a beer festival in the sense that their is quality contol or preselection to offer the best beers. The pubs in the old city sell their standard beers (also national brands like Erdinger). But there are many stalls with beers from Bamberg Country and City, p.e. - Mönchsambacher - Huppendorfer - Hummel, Merkendorf - Krug, Geisfeld - Hübner, Steinsfeld - Fischer Freudeneck all Bamberg City breweries etc. It doesn't exist a beer list or beer guide for the different stalls and pubs. You have to discover. The prices are a little bit higher than the normal pub prices. We take 3 Euro for 0,5 l Huppendorfer Vollbier (in contrast to 2,40 Euro at the Café Abseits). But there is a wide range of prices, higher in the centre (Katzenberg etc.), cheaper on the edge of the festival railing. Seatings for groups are difficult without reservation and a reservation often isn't possible (the pubs don't like times with empty tables, waiting for guests with reservation). but for singles or 2,3 persons it is possible to get places. But it isn't festival for sitting some hours on the same place but for go around. You can go with Your beer to another outdoor spaces (but You have pay a deposit for the stein/glass). P.e. You can buy a Huppendorfer and sit down in the beergarden of Schlenkera and vice versa. You can buy elsewhere food and sit down in another area. In the pubs this is'nt allowed. Many shop (bakeries, butchers) have open. So You can also get cheap food. Famous are the meat loaf sandwiches of the butcher Liebold. I like also the plum cake of the Bakery Seel (both shops are left from the Schlenkerla pub). You should prefer the time after the beginning (early evening, thursday, friday, monday and in the afternoon of saturday and sonday. About the day there are many short events, p.e. the Fischerstechen (fighting men on fisher boats), Hahnenschlag. Some weeks before You will find a program: http://www.sandkerwa.de Expected it is difficult to get rooms. It is difficult each your but 2012 there is the "Landesgartenschau" (garden show) with many visitors too. An alternative cans be rooms in Bamberg-Country. There is a special bus serice: http://www.sandkerwa.de/sandkerwa-express/
