On the way to Bamberg...

Weißenburg has touristic interest as well; it's a former "Free Imperial City," and is suffused with plenty of history, as well as being in close proximity to some of the ancient Limes sites. However, be aware that there's construction going on in the main square (Marktplatz). Weissenbrug was actually in our original travel plan last year, until a certain German auto manufacturer royally screwed up our order (which, ironically, turned out to be to our advantage - we came out way ahead by not going through with it). I will echo the recommendation to take a look at the german-breweries.com site, as it may be the single best resource out there for English speakers/readers on what's available beer-wise in Germany. Steve Thomas's GBG to Germany is one heroic effort, and the web site is immensely helpful in updating the book, given the many closures (and, yes, openings) that have happened in just the last few years. Couple that with some route planning using Google or Bing maps for locations and the bahn.de site to plot out transport, and you'll be in good shape.
