Schlenkerla Eiche

Had a "couple" of Eiches during weekend of 18-20.12. On Friday evening drank in the company of Matthias Trum, he was quite proud of the beer. There will be more of it next year, basically with the same recipe. The beer is sweet compared to the other Schlenkerla beers, so it's a different kind of animal. The Rauch is indeed a lot milder from oak than beechwood, and as the hoplevel is the same as in the Urbock, the high OG (18,9 %) gives lots of sweetness. More hops might dry it, but that might also dim the delicate smokiness. It's not overtly sweet though, more in line with the usual stronger (doppel)bocks. Even though the smoke is mild and gentle, the beer still has the "smoked ham" -aroma. In the mouth the sweetness is quite distinct and honeyish, but the aftertaste stays on the dry side, which makes the beer perilously easy to drink - 8 % alcohol! Seemed like this beer was dividing the opinion of the locals, some enjoyed it, but some said (like Nick B. above) that they'll rather stick by the beechwood versions. I did like the beer - I haven't had a better doppelbock. Must come back next December. (Actually going back already in January...)
