Biking in the countryside

Not only are there bikepaths, when you do have ride on the road the drivers are courteous. I remember once when my Dad and I had somehow gotten off the path (I think it was from Hirschaid) and ended up on a country road. Coming the other direction was a huge transport truck. Rapidly overtaking us was a big black Mercedes. My LA reflexes were still in effect and I thought "We are toast" -- in LA a big Mercedes makes its own rules. Anyway, the Mercedes braked, let the truck pass us and then passed us with a wide berth. And gave us a friendly wave as he passed. One of my "Toto, we're not in Kansas anymore" moments in Franconia :) A German friend explained it this: Most Germans have ridden a bicycle as adults and so are aware of what its like, while in the States very few (proportionately) have ridden a bike as transportation since they got a drivers license -- or at most since they finished college.
