Help Please -- looking for hotel/brewery in Bamberg |

| Carolyn, Fässla is fine - friends and I have stayed there lots of times. Many of the people staying there are German families looking for good-value accommodation, so I don't think it can be like staying at an Elks Lodge (not something I have any experience of, I must admit). I'm a bit surprised that people think it looks 1950s-ish - it's not super-modern, but it's not a museum piece either! Friends have stayed at Spezial, which doesn't have as many facilities as Fässla but they said it was cozier. Are you sure that there are rooms at Greifenklau? Their website doesn't seem to mention them? On the other hand, Mahrs has a holiday apartment ("Ferienwohnung") in the brewery complex - see http://www.mahrs.de/index.php?id=128 - but they require a minimum stay of four days. A number of the breweries in the villages and towns outside Bamberg have accommodation (e.g. Löwenbräu in Buttenheim), but you have the added hassle of getting there, so I would recommend staying in Bamberg for your first visit and making it your base for any excursions. If you want to stay in a former brewery in the heart of Bamberg, try Hotel Alt Ringlein - http://www.alt-ringlein.com/ - it's almost opposite Schlenkerla. I've stayed in the oldest part (1302), the "Fackwerflügel", which also has the virtue of being cheaper than the main building. Good luck and enjoy your visit! |
