Echter Zoigl

Three weeks ago, I had the good fortune of experiencing the Real Deal. I visited the Zoiglbrauerei Wolframstubn-Familie Forster (Windischeschenbach) and Lingl Zoigl-Familie Bauer (Neuhaus). Thanks to A Zoigl Tour by Mat Wilson I was able to find the places easily. A True Experience. Setting outside, the Zoiglbrauerei Wolframstubn, the beer tasted a little like the beer at Brauerei Gradl (Leups)-but better; slightly sweet and malty. After one, I went in search of the Lingl Zoigl-Familie Bauer (Neuhaus) (not covered by Mat). It was easily found at the end of the street. Just look for the Zoigl Star. Beer was different. Tasted more hoppy with a pleasant bitter taste. Good Beer! Unfortunately, I had to return to my Hotel and settle for Kulmbacher Monchshof Heffe Weizen . Close to the Hotel, was a Keller that served Pirker Zoigl Kellerbier (a specialty beer from the Pirker Brewery or so I was told- not that I understand much German). The following weekend, using the Bier Region Franken Map, I found Brauerei Sauer at Rossdorfer am Forest. Had possible the best beer that I have ever had-fantastically GOOD, served in a charming, quite enjoyable Gasthaus. Only had time for one, before moving on to Brauerei Griess-Geisfeld. Passed up Brauerei Krug, parking issue. Driving-you can’t stop everywhere. More heavenly good beer. Made a quick trip to Erlangen to Kitzmann Brau. Beer is just good. Missed their store opening. Too much traffic-not best use of beer time. Live and Learn. Yes-this was LIVING. Thanks Fred!
