Bavarian Smoking Ban

The European Commission has plans of a strict smoking ban, but until now these plans didn't come into effect. If they do so in the future, it may be between 2010 and 2012. After the decision of the Bundesverfassungsgericht on the Lissabon EU treaty, the competence of the EU is an open question. Today in Germany, smoking ban legislation is a matter of each Bundesland (here: Bavaria). In Bavaria the rules are planned to be changed from August 1st, this year - if the Bavarian parliament agrees. The decisive voting of the parliament is planned for the middle of July (between 14th and 16th). This planned new law allows for exceptions, among others, in certain "drink related" one-room pubs, if they are smaller than 75 qm. We have to wait and see, but observers feel that the bill will pass.
