http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basilica_of_the_Vierzehnheiligen explains the origin of the "Fourteen Saints" - actually, the "Fourteen Holy Helpers " with the implication that these are "holy helpers in time of need" (which is why Trunk's beer is "Vierzehnheiligen Nothelfertrunk").
