January's visit

As usual, much enjoyed visit in late January. Weather cold but crisp and dry. As for the pubs: very rude man in Klosterbrau, more or less threw us out at 10.15 pm - ok, we were the last there but he could have been a lot nicer. This confirms our last visit: good beer, could be good place, but rude staff and nil atmosphere. Quite the opposite to Mahr's: nice staff, fabulous atmosphere, particularly in late afternoon/early evening and heavenly beer. Why don't the other breweries do an unfiltered beer like 'U'? I love the beer in Bamberg but why does it all have to be filtered and pasteurised (?) even when they only have to bring it a dozen metres? However, still love Schlenkerla, Spezial and Fassla. Greifenklau and Ambrosianum too restauranty for my liking, with little atmosphere. 'Discovered' Stohrenkeller (thanks Fred) - an excellent proper pub, with nice helpful guys serving and a good atmosphere. Incidentally, if anyone has read the late John White's page on Hallstadt, it is quite possible and easy to walk there. Just follow the cycle route from Bamberg station, takes about an hour. Sadly, the Golden Lion was shut (late afternoon) - does it still open? If so, does anyone know when? Going to try to make it back later in the year, as much still to see. Sadly, looks as if Ryanair are going to axe the Shannon-Hahn route which makes it tricky for us but we'll find a way!
