Wheat Beers - Why Bother?

For me, it is a combination of things: In many places, the wheat beers are just an afterthought, a marketing thing. In the Bamberg area, I think they just call up Brauerei Göller in Zeil am Main and order xx kegs and yy pallets of standard wheat beer #2. I don't think there is an recipe (on the purchasing brewery) involved. Once you've had it in one place, there is no need to have it in the next. That being said, if the brewery does actually brew the wheat beer, I do enjoy it. I love the Mahrs Der Weisse Bock and Festtags Weizen and drink them when available. This past December I had the Gutmann Weizenbock and Hümmel (Merkendorf) Weizenbock and both were outstanding. And while the Schlenkerla and Spezial wheat beers are not to my taste, I urge people to try them if they drink wheat beers. Just like when I go to Düsseldorf, I don't drink wheat beers (except once, just to try), I want to drink the beer the breweries there are known for. The same when I go to a small Franconian brewery, I want to drink the beers they are known for, not the beers they think they need to have to round out their beverage list. I should add, for many small breweries (not all!) I'd put the "Pils" they have in the same category -- something to fill in the menu. The difference there is they are at least likely to brew it -- but not always, e.g. Klosterbräu Bamberg.
