"if there is a base there, do so many American servicemen make the locals unfriendly to American tourists?" I found it to be quite the opposite in the case of Bamberg. After all the base is good for local business and the servicemen that I met and drank with when I was there last year seemed well behaved. I also have a friend who was stationed in Bamberg for 1 year (he's now in Iraq) and he said he found the locals to be quite friendly to the servicemen. On a side note, I did find it amusing though how clueless the American servicmen seem to be in regards to the beer that is available to them. My friend had been there for almost a year and had not visited one single brewpub in the city until I took him on a walking tour one night in March of Schlenkerla, Ambrausanium, Klosterbrau, Greifenklau, and Stohrenkeller. He was amazed and had no idea that so many great beer choices existed all within walking distance. He said most of the servicemen there that go out on the town are more interested in visiting night clubs where they can drink piss and chase skirt rather than having good beer. I recall one evening when I was having a beer and dinner in the alstadt a group of about 8-10 young American servicemen came into the pub. One of them, thinking I was a local, came up and asked me where the night clubs where that they could find women. I loved the blank look on his face when I lectured him on how he should be more concerned with the beer when in Bamberg.
