Re-reading your post...no, there's no re-calculation of the bill involved. A better example might be when the bill is €18,05. Don't give €20...that's too much, unless you're in love with the nice young server. Say "Neunzehn, bitte" (nineteen, please) and hand over a €20. She/he will give you €1 back in change, grateful for the small (by NA standards) tip. Outside *really* touristy areas, this is absolutely the norm--OTOH, not tipping at all is quite bad, from what I've seen. Too much, and you're just another rich foreigner. Do it the way they do, and you're demonstrating your knowledge of how they do things, regardless of whether it's goofy or not. Hey, Fußball's back on TV after Halbzeit!
