Term "Franken"

Connected with the european unification movement the “Metropolregion Nuernberg” is shaped (against some opposition of the bavarian cental command). Core of the Metropolregion is the city of Nuernberg (which ist the largest city in Franconia). Purpose of the institution shall be among other things, to represent the region worlwide and to promote it. Nuernberg has invitated all citys and districts around to take part. Beside some districs in Northbavaria many franconian citys and districts will take part. The name of the metropolregion is still not quite clear. Some say the word “Franken” (franconia) should be part of the name. The chairman of the institution, which is also the mayor of Nuernberg, takes the view that this term should not be used. Firstly because of the northbavarian districts (which is understandable). Secondly he says the term “Franken” or “Franconia” would not be known enough wordwide and it would be mixed up with “France”. What to you think about this argument? Is the term “Franken” or “Franconia” mixed up with the term “France”?
