| We stayed up and down the track (from Forchheim to Ebensfeld) right through the worst periods of the reconstruction. We had a few unpleasant experiences and quite a few times trains just didn't turn up. It destroyed any lingering belief in German efficiency! It quite amazes me now when I think of the enormous chages that have taken place along the track - all those little old stations (Hallstadt, Breitenguessbach, Ebing, Ebensfeld, etc.) have been swept away and replaced by modern clones! It used to be possible to walk from Merkendorf to Kemmern through the forest, crossing the railtrack by level crossing but not any more! Sacrifices we make for progress but I suppose that they said the same when the railway was built in the first place! |
