Barry - was it Americans who told you that canned Schlenkerla was "quite good"? If so, they may have meant it as high praise, whereas many of we Brits would interpret it as almost damning with faint praise (I got caught out at work once when an American used quite in the American sense and I interpreted it the wrong way). This extract from the MacMillan Dictionary blog explains further: In British English, 'quite' usually means ‘fairly’, e.g. 'The film was quite enjoyable, although some of the acting was weak.' When American speakers say 'quite', they usually mean ‘very’, e.g. 'We’ve examined the figures quite thoroughly.' Speakers of British English sometimes use 'quite' to mean ‘very’, but only before words with an extreme meaning: e.g. 'The whole experience was quite amazing'. Apologies if this seems a bit OTT. |
