[Ack! Graphics pushed text off the page above. Ignore that in lieu of this instead.] You weren't making what up? You say the differences aren't great. That's fine for you. For me/us, considering moving to a new place, the climate might be more important to us than to you. I was interested in comparing the climate in a few British locations to where we've lived in the past. The biggest differences were between Minnesconsin and Oregon, where Erlangen lies somewhere like a third of the way from one to the other: not nearly so horrid as Minnesconsin. What would it be like for us moving from Erlangen to Thanet, Weymouth, or Stockport? It turns out Thanet has the nicest climate for us, arguably even possibly better than Erlangen's, due to the warmer winters and cooler summers. A difference in a couple of degrees, a few milimeters of rain, or hours of sunshine might be trivial to you, but to us, considering a degradation in weather conditions, it would be nice to minimise any degradation. And Thanet would provide us with the best conditions in the UK that I've seen...among places we would have considered moving to to start up a business. (All moot now anyway.) Just saw Alan Titchmarsh explaining the Thanet microclimate on TV (The Seasons, dubbed in German) last night, as coincidence would have it. Anyway, here's the forecast for the coming week for Broadstairs, Colwyn Bay, and Erlangen: (Full-size image here.) Come visit us in Broadstairs next month - very reasonably priced rooms above the excellent Shep's gaff just up the road from our flat. The only times I've been to the UK in *winter* have been twice to Manchester for the CAMRA fest in January, where I was lucky with the weather: cool and damp. And a fortnight over Xmas & New Year's in Ramsgate, which was quite nice. Both are warmer than here, but the NW would of course be wetter. My mate Tandleman says he only likes my visiting because I bring good weather along. AFA the quality of life living in a given British place, I'm only arguing about the weather in this discussion. As I said above, an ideal solution for me would be to move Sheffield to Thanet. |
