That's true, Mads, but we all go to pubs and drink beer for different reasons and bring different experiences to the process. Since I've been involved in this Forum, I have met or discussed beer with many people from many different backgrounds and this has enriched my own appreciation of beer. For example, I didn't have any real notion about American beer drinking experience or about the history of beer in the USA. Our American colleagues have enlightened me about these matters and I can now understand why American beer tastes the way it does and why real ale is so relatively uncommon in the USA. I don't quite understand why some British beer enthusiasts want to introduce American-style beer into the UK but that's a different matter! Like Jason, the beer drinking experience as a whole is important to me, so I can understand that 'sitting on a hill with a view' (a rather simplistic version of Jason's statement!) can make up for quite a few shortcomings in the quality of the beer. Where I now live, within a 10 minute walk, I can sample every night 5 different real ales, all very well served, and never repeated! I can walk around the corner and sample at least another 5 at the local Wetherspoons. So, just drinking good quality beer is not so difficult. But, the experience of being in a really nice Frankische Keller (is that correct, Nick?) or going into the Schemm at Faessla or Schlenkerla (winter only!), or a really nice rural brewery like Zehendner is a unique and rare experience. As, of course, will be my first visit to Czechia since 1968, when I get the chance to do it! |
