No, he was a young chap from Croatia (or Slovenia, can't exactly remember) but I don't know whether he will be still there. Things seem to be constantly changing at Mahrs. The older chap in Spezi is probably the brother of Christian Merz - yes, very friendly. Having discussed this many times with German friends, I don't tip at 10% or any other set amount but just make up the sum to a convenient figure. For one serving, I don't tip (maybe if it's €4,60 or 4.80, just say 'Ok'). For €9.60, €10.00, etc. If service is lousy, I don't tip at all! We don't usually eat in Stub'n, so figures are usually fairly low. Regarding tips, one thing etched on my memory (sorry, if you remember me having said this before) is to beware of saying 'thank you' when you hand over cash (sort of English habit as opposed to German way of saying 'Bitte' when money is handed over). Waiting staff in Bamberg regard that as saying 'keep the change'! We got outrageously ripped off in Mahrs without realising why and nearly the same in Mainlust/Viereth but good friend Don was on hand to prevent massive overspend! Different in the Oberpflaz: did the same thing in Lingl/Neuhaus - waitress looked questioningly at a €50 note for a bill of about €16.00 and then said 'Are you sure, that's a lot of money?' Was a bit embarrassed but thanked her and made sure that she was adequately tipped for her honesty. Difference between country and town? |
