Footnote: we had some friends around last night, so I opened a few PET bottles of my Special Mild, brewed from a really cheap 'Make-your-own-drinks' kit but with added EKG hops, grown by myself and freeze dried. No sugar but 1000 g of Muntons Extra light spray malt. Let's face it, this process is somewhere near the nadir of homebrewing (according to some). The two of us who drank it really enjoyed the ale (it tasted at least as good as some that I sampled in recent visits to the UK) but, more to the point of recent discussions re Polypins, was the remarkable state of its preservation! My brewing notes tell me that it was brewed on May 10, 2015 and had an OG of around 1045 (ok for Nick, then). After a few weeks in my plastic brew bucket (another low level technique), it has remained in a 2-litre ex-bottled water PET bottle for probably 10 months and was in as good condition (according to my taste buds) as when fresh. Does this suggests that, in my dotage, I am a remarkably able brewer or that there is a little element of mysticism surrounding the process? Of course, brewing one batch of 23 litres is a bit different from turning out (oops, nearly said churning out!) endless gallons in a professional brewery - isn't it? |
