| I agree Barry,the only thing required to keep cask ale well is cellar craft.and a landlord who actually drinks it goes a long way.we used gas assisted handpumps in the brewery bar as it was a fair drop to the cellar/brewery.But no gas comes into contact with the beer,it just turns a cam that nips the pipe forcing the beer up making an easier pull at the pump. Interesting your observation on wooden casks,not all brewers were as efficient/carefull at cleaning,sometimes inparting a slightly sour note that was not always unpleasant. In fact, it can be found sometimes in sam smiths OBB, Nick has a good point about the abomination that is keykegs,a lot of it is fashion driven.and comes from the desire to appear "cool" and modern.I looked at keykegs,but was never sold on the idea.also never did the costings re cask v keykeg.But would be suprised if over the long term the ss casks did not come out as more cost effective. All of this is of course is progress,but I for one hope that there is still room for tradition. |
