The brewers in the Oberpfalz have had their family rights passed down for generations and KNOW how to brew. There is very little experimentation and the beer is (in the context of the beer spectrum) very narrow. It's about as far removed from a craft gypsy brewery arrangement as is possible. There is no hostility here, merely a frustration that the US, and most modern brewing countries in turn, have taken yet another old world tradtition and turned it into something it isn't, mis-representing and romantisizing history. Don't get me wrong, the US led resurection of porters, barley wines and sour ales (as examples) is awesome, but just be careful and have a sense of responsibility when banding around countries' heritage and tradtions. I don't have any issues with the idea of a communal brewery - it's actually quite novel and would give people access to good equipment and expertise etc. But they shouldn't be using the term Zoigl. Just as some of the commercial Oberpfalz breweries shouldn't (or Wolframstub'n). It causes a proliferation of misinformation and dilutes the understanding of genuine article. That's why we have AOP and DOC origin controls to protect traditional produce in Europe. |
