Micropubs, Cask v Keg, etc. |

I imagine a micropub isn't a pop-up then, as it requires leasing or buying the property, just like a conventional business. The prices do seem to be lower. I do have to admit that I've drunk some keg beer over here, unfortunately. Yes, it would be the new, so-called "craft keg", that is, unfiltered and non-traditional English hops. And it was quite good, but still, why not just make it that much better and cask-condition it? The famous, much-sought-after Kernel Table Beer at 3% abv...I'd rather drink my homebrewed half-IPA. The newly reopened Ravensgate Arms has 14 lines, about half cask and half keg. All are tapped with what look like Guinness taps, and the young chap (a Vancouverinian!) running it explained how the cask lines work, but it somehow went over my head. Uses a vaccuum, but somehow the gas never touches the beer, or something. It sounds like key-keg, actually. He charges 3.30 a pint of 4% cask, a pound more for the keg stuff. Out too late last night, again. Met Ian in Canterbury, came together to Ramsgate, where he was able to rate a couple of new beers for him, at the little beer fest (my photos of the beer list) at the classic old waterfront pub The Queen's Head, see the prices - GBP 3 a pint for cask, 4 for "craft" key keg. Then to that Ravensgate Arms. You'd like it. Have run into 2.50 pints of decent local beers at a couple of traditional pubs, haven't really been going into Spoons-like places, having the dog along. Also, Ramsgate must be the largest English or Welsh city to *not* have a Wetherspoons. This is supposedly going to change though, if they open one up ON the beach here. That will (would?) supposedly be the largest of all Spoonses. We are disappointed at how dog un-friendly eating establishments are here. People seem to want to blame increasing bans on dogs in places on EU regulations, but I suspect that's misdirected nonsense. ObFranconiaBeer: Have one bottle of Pyraser Festbier left to give away, will probably bring it to the Ravensgate Arms landlord tonight. I only brought a half dozen bottles to give away, having not much room in the car. Ian got most of the others, one went to the chap running the holiday house in Ieper....Wipers. |
