It's pretty much like Belgium, though possibly 10% more expensive? I could never quite see the point in paying at least double for a bottle of beer in a pub than in a supermarket. One of the points of drinking cask conditioned ale and, its Deutsche equivalent of Bier vom Fass, in a pub is that it allows you to truly sample the brewer's art, with no additives (like CO2!). With bottled beer, you can achieve the same effect by buying a bottle from a supermarket. Pubs in Belgium and Holland certainly make you pay for the experience and I wonder why that should be the case. Are taxes on alcohol higher than in Britain and Ireland - hard to imagine that they are? Certainly real estate is no more expensive and pubs everywhere in Europe have heavy overheads based on similar legal requirements. However, given that you can probably buy a bottle of Orval for a couple of euro in a supermarket, which probably makes 100% gross profit on their purchase price, the pricing of €4.30 seems hard to explain. The simple process of charging what you think customers might be prepared to pay might be the answer. |
