The problem is the Ringwood yeast needs lots of tender loving care and many (most?) use brewpubs didn't take care of it properly.

If you haven't been to LA this probably won't mean much but Sam Samaniego, the proprietor of the Stuffed Sandwich passed away last week. It's hard to describe the SS -- it was a neighborhood sandwiich shop that just happend to have a beer list worthy of the best cafes in Belgium. Even 20 years ago he would have four different vintages on Anchor Xmas on draft during December and had the best selection of aged beers this side of the Kulminator. It was always a dream of mine (and many others, I'm sure) to introduce him to Dirk -- they would have either become fast friends or hated each other because they both are a bit crusty.

An intereresting side effect of Californa alcohol laws was you had to buy a "meal" before you could buy beer (an order of fries wouldn't count) So on the menu was a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for $2.50 -- it satisfied the state definition of a "meal" and was the most popular item on the menu.

And while on of topic sad news (but this is sad in a different way). W. J. Kavanaugh's in Dublin -- which i think came in a discussion here -- closed last week. Their hand pumps will be going to their sister pub L. Mulligan Grocer so there will still be cask ale available in Dublin.

Damn, now I need to go have a beer.
