Excitement mounts in the Dative |

I would suspect the advent of the international media (TV, films) and of course, das Internet, have had much more of an impact than us foreigners. "Denglish" is a common complaint: crossing up Deutsch and English unnecessarily. Not sure, this business with the dative & genetive may have been around for a very long time. I shall have to enquire of the learned when I'm at the school next time. Also, people in the country, like, at the Bierkeller, often use another bastardisation of the language, ironically mimicing English -- just by coincidence. Instead of asking, grammitcally correctly, "drink you beer often?", they'll ask "do you beer often drink?" IOW, using the "do" auxilliary verb like we do in English, though completely unnecessarily and incorrectly. And these are people who speak as little English as anyone you'll encounter, having not even learnt it in school back then. |
