Now that's what I call amber! |

In describing what we were to expect at Brauerei Meister, Juergen said that the beer would be amber in colour. However (and I know that appreciation of colour is pretty subjective)), it seemed to me to more of a reddy brown (or a browny red, take your pick), which is how I would describe most of the Frankische Schweiz dark beers. But Aichinger, Heiligenstadt seemed to me a definite amber! Maybe that's why it's called 'Special'! Anyway, putting these petty excursions aside, it is a very more-ish beer, so we had more... and more until we had to leave. Difficult to describe the taste, certainly nothing like the beer we tasted last Friday, not quite as malty but not particularly hoppy, just lovely. Only way is to go there and try it yourself. As for the pub, very friendly, excellent service from a very personable young lady and just a few sightings of the elderly but silent proprietor. Great to meet Gunnar and I hope we meet again on Wednhesday in Strassgiech. Today (Tuesday), we visited Nuremburg, a town of which I have memories going back to nearly 50 years ago. We did our cultural bit visiting the Toy Museum, worth doing, and then moved on to Brauerei Altstadhof. Nice place but a bit touristy, as you might expect from its location, and not the cheapest beer at €3.00/.4 litre, which actually is still quite cheap by Irish standards. We tried one each of the Rotbier and the Schwarzbier. J. liked the schwarzbier but it was a bit ti roasted for my taste. I preferred the Rotbier but I wiuld say it was the best beer sampled during ths trip. A short journey by tram and U-bahn (thanks Nick) brought us to Schanzenbrau. We tried the helles and the dunkles, the latter I guess is really a Rotbier, again this was the one the J. liked but I likied the helles, very light and very hoppy for a Franken beer - a real 'Nick Beer'! Looking round, I noticed that I was the only person drinking helles, which, I presume confirms the Nuremburg prediliction for the red stuff. Interesting place and certainly well worth a visit. |
