You can get half-litre Seidla(s), especially if you play the "poor foreigner who can't drink a whole Mass" card, or by getting to know some of the publicans over the course of yearly visits. Or, as a group, bring your own Krug(s) along except one of you, and that one buys a beer and splits it with the others. I wouldn't do this whilst sitting at a table though, nor do I think they'd let you do it. But standing in the roadway next to the Keller, it works fine. It's a way to figure out which are the best/worst/favourite. My personal strategy is start at the very top, Blümlein's Keller, with its Eichhorn (Forchheim) beer, which is lagered for longer than the Eichhorn beer at the Eichhorn Keller, and is so mild that it's the best to start with. Then the others. Probably end with Löwenbräu (Buttenheim), as it's usually the best-hopped of the bunch. The four Forchheimer breweries' beers are worth trying, of course, as are basically all the others except Wolfshöher. Last year saw the replacement of Weißenohe "Kloster" beer with a beer brewed to a homebrewer group's recipe at Neder. I assume that's the same this year. I may actually not make it this year for the first time since 2005, since we'll be away on holiday for most of it. And I don't do it on weekends. But maybe the Friday. |
