| This is interesting because of the 'zoigl question'. More and more commercial breweries are using the name zoigl to describe some random brand of beer in flagrant abuse of the principle that zoigl is widely taken to be that brewed in kommunbrauerei. The stupid thing is that zoigl is not a type of beer but really refers to the old practice of people selling beer in their houses. Although this is no longer practiced, the way that it operates in Eschawo/Neuhaus is a kind of modern day version. As my friend (and source of information to the late John White) Ludwig Lindner put it, it is an ethos that includes the sociability of zoigl stub'n and the friendliness and generosity of the host families. I must state that there are divergent views on this question even among the Eschawo stub'n owners: some think that the widespread use of the term gives free publicity and helps to attract more visitors, while others feel that the term should be protected (obviously, I side with the latter!). Apparently, the echter zoigl brewers tried to gain protection like the koelsch brewers but were refused, I think on the grounds (as above) that zoigl was not a unique product that could be defined. |
