This seems to be a pan-European trend. Because of drink driving, smoking regulations and, most important, cost factors, people are just not drinking so much in pubs. Of course, in Bavaria, we have seen that hygene regulations (some of them extreme, in my view) have made the cost of refurbishment prohibitive. In Eschawo, Anton Heinl (Zum Roud'n) told me that, once he retires, the stube will close because any new owner will have to make many alterations to entrances, ceiling heights, etc. In addition, his tanks are not stainless steel and will have to be changed. I think that Manfred Punzmann (Schoilmichel) said that his S/S tanks cost over €20,000. That's an impossible outlay when zoigl costs only €1.70 for a half litre. Anton also told me that me it is imperative that Eschawo should have at least one more stube because there are some weekends when only 1 is open and one stube cannot properly service the demand. He tried to persuade me that I should buy the building next door and open a zoiglstube - the purchase cost is €268,000 and, sadly, I can't spare that from our meagre UK pension! |
