" But geeks do it anyway, because the act of boiling a bit of the mash supposedly gives a richer malt component to the wort. " Actually I find most beer "geeks" I talk to about it argue vehemently that it is a complete waste of time. Now us beer "enthusiasts" on the other hand ..... j/k "I personally do a sparge-free mash, which supposedly enhances maltiness to begin with. And the lack of a sparging process eliminates the risks (and hassle!!!) " I do this a lot too. I really like the way this no sparge works and do this almost everytime that I'm only doing a 5 gallon batch. I can't do it with 10 gallon or especially heavy batchs as my mash tun won't hold enough grain and water to make it work. I do find that this process does enhance maltiness as well. It's a matter of trading efficiency for time and quality. For a homebrewer that doesn't need to be cost concious this works nicely most of the time.
