Ah yes, the famous Oregon-developed Tettnanger hop variety. It's widely known. Or maybe not. Hop research in the USA, including development of new cultivars, is hardly limited to OSU, the delights of provincialism aside. OSU and WSU (Washington State U) divide up quite a bit of hop research of all kinds between them, including cultivar development, with cooperation from Yakima Chief and other hop merchants and growers as well. These days, there is no one "king of aroma hops," because so many of the newer cultivars exhibit such distinctive characteristics. The prize for the most distinctive of the bunch might go to Sorachi Ace hops, a Japanese-developed cultivar that gets a lot of attention for its complex aromatics, especially when grown in Yakima Valley soils and climate. Not surprisingly, most German brewers stay clear of these cultivars, with certain notable exceptions. British brewers don't seem quite as shy about them these days. |
