Abbreviating URLs

Thanks Jan. Not sure that I understand where the safety risk is? Presumably, that they might lead to somewhere that you wouldn't want to go? What will be tume span for abbreviated URLs? I want to use them in my forthcoming book to help stoip clogging up the footnotes.
