I think you've hit the key phrase "if I... have the time". While it is true that walking costs nothing, but renting a bike will cost something, the experiences of the two different modes of transport aren't really that far apart. The trip I described in the original thread could not have been done by walking only because of the distances covered and the time available. Had the terrein been flatter, we could have done it all by bike within 10-12 hours (depending how long we stayed in each pub). Looking at one of them, I calculated they are assuming you can walk at 5km per hour. I'd consider that a pretty brisk pace ("normal" walking is about 3km per hour).
