| No, not English. It's easier for her to follow German dialogue when there are subtitles. Guess I need to practice writing more clearly. The irritating thing is that when they dub documentaries like this or "reality TV shows", they don't silence the original audio track, but just make it quieter, so you can hear it as background noise behind the dubbed German voices. Drama shows, OTOH, are dubbed properly. Idiots. Subtitles, mainly intended for the hearing impaired, are transmitted over broadcast & cable TV via the teletext system (which doesn't exist in North America AFAIK) that's been around since the 80's (?). Not for every programme, in fact I imagine for only a minority, but still, it's nice when they are there. Play with the red/green/blue/yellow buttons on the TV remote to activate teletext next time you're over here. < http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teletext > Correction: since the 1970's. I don't want to buy any more DVDs. And these ain't cheap. Eats into the Oregon hop budget. Plus, it's fun to play with my cable TV capture card, extract the subtitles, edit the files and all that. |
