Gold-Ochsen in Spielbach rates solidly as a gem, one of the singularly best experiences ever in the genuine old traditions of Franconian countryside hospitality. I'm so glad we got to go there last year, as I'm not sure how things will sort themselves this time; we have a lot to pack in to our three weeks. We're even interrupting our stay in Zoigl country for a couple of days, having found out about a bucket-list event in Belgium; transport is already sorted, just need to book lodgings for a couple nights and we'll be there too. All that, plus introducing another one of our local Seattle friends to the delights of Bamberg and Franconia. I'm not at all surprised that you liked Spielbach, Barry. Lunch with beer there was a wonderful thing on a rainy Sunday afternoon, but the real treat was being invited by the 80yo+ landlady to sit at her table in back for an after-lunch chat. No plain old modern-style hurry-up, this; first, there was where are you from, what brings you here, did you like it, oh you have German antecedents and family, and so on, before she tallied up an absurdly reasonable tab for our lunch. I so hope another trip there will be possible in the coming years. Maps and boundaries are funny things, aren't they? You can leave Bavaria and still be in Franconia. That's true in a surprisingly long strip of 'Franconian' territory along the Bavaria-BW border; even the Engel brewery in the city of Crailsheim has its Franconian roots, especially during Volksfest season, which starts next Thursday and runs through the weekend. The main beer tent has white and red banners running along the ceiling, just to make sure you know where you really are: http://tiny.cc/EnglFrank for an example. And there are at least a couple more places in the region that trade on their Franconian tradition as well. |
