Bamberg to Uetzing and Metzgerbrauerei Reichert News.

Scott and I had a run out in the car on Saturday principally so I could go to Dremel and Wattendorf to get their beer. After finding the place closed until 16.00, we managed to buy 6 bottles to take away from someone working behind the house. Lucky or what? As a way of getting back to Bamberg we drove over the hill and down into Frauendorf and on towards Bad Staffelstein, and when we reached Stublang we diverted up the hill to Metzgerbrauerei Reichert at Uetzing. The brewery and butchers shop is just on your left as you enter the village. There is a big sign that said closed at 13:00 (it was by this time 14:10) but when we got there, but we could see people outside drinking so we parked up and found it still wide open and serving groceries and beer. We had wanted a 5 litre keg to take into Bamberg on Saturday evening but they had sold out (we eventually tracked one down at Staffelbergbrau for 8.50 - bargain). As we waited in line to be served, a local in the shop asked us if we wanted a beer to wait with, and pooped through to cellar, emerging a minute late with 2 glasses of beer, so for the first time in my life, I was drinking beer and shopping at the same time. Being out of kegs was a shame, but we managed to secure a 1L bottle for me to take back to London to share, as well as a couple of Holzdeckels (Sp?) purchased as presents, and then were going to retire to the drinking area to finish the beer's off. At that moment the brewer arrived and through a combination the internationally recognised language of beer, my pigeon German, his pigeon English and a lot of pointing, I intimated that I had thought his beer we'd tried at Bad Staffelstein the previous week at the Brewery festival was the best I'd tried all week. He was thrilled and promptly led us on an impromptu tour of the brewery and smokehouse (which was chock full of rather good looking ham legs) and then led us upstairs to a new room. Now, the purpose of this rather long winded missive is to report that if he is small brewery now , he soon won't be. He is within 3 weeks of having a spanking brand new, freshly installed brewery completed in a new extension to the house, at a cost of 400,000 euros, and that very soon after that, the brewery will be open to the public with tables and chairs installed and that you'll be able to go for drink 'on the shop floor' so to speak. A return visit is now being planned when the new location is up and running. Go and see him if you can, you'll be pleasantly surprised at how good his beer is and by the general quirkiness of the whole operation, but I think with the new brewery almost ready to roll, the quaintness will soon disappear and that he will become a major player in the area.
