You could apply this to a lot of the "craft" breweries in the USA, too, in that many produce unfiltered, unpasteurized beer, but still employ CO2-powered dispense, simply because that's the norm and has been for decades. British standards for cask dispense are not applied in the USA where that is done; a typical British cask ale drinker would probably be appalled at some of the murky pints poured by gravity here, and one I had recently had so much suspended in the murk, it left a fair bit of residue at the bottom of the glass! I've had discussions (somewhat on-going) in my home region about the lack of standards as applied to cask dispense here, but that's a problem set that will take some time to solve. In the USA, we don't yet have a grass-roots beer-consumers' advocacy organization like CAMRA (let alone Zythos or PINT and the rest of the member orgs in the EBCU). Neither do the Germans, owing to the oft-discussed "our beer is perfect, just shut up and drink it" mentality. |
