See comments in other messages. But in direct response to this message, I don't have any evidence that the Gaststätten experience is a recent experience and it probably isn't. Aren't Gaststätten the equivalent of taverns in Brtain - i.e. places that serve food, drink and accommodation, as opposed to Stube, which would be more the equivalent of pubs? I suppose that the 'common man' (drinking in pubs/bars, etc. being historically more a male preoccupation in most countries) would have been more likely to have stopped in a pub or Stube for a pint/seidla or two on the way home from work than to have gone into a Gaststätten or tavern for seidlas and food. I assume that was the role of Schwemm - i.e. a place where you could go in a Gaststätten just to drink? Generally, now, we use the Schemm in Bamberg pubs, as it tends to be much more convivial and we aren't forced to watch people eating! All of which makes me wonder if there were lots of Stube in Bamberg in the past and where might they have gone? It is noticeable that the pubs of zoiglland are referred to as 'Stube' not 'Gaststätten' - presumably because of their drink orientated history? Must get on with some real work now! |
