Had written this before reading Nick's message so will just let it stand. We finally managed to meet up with Nick B and a grand day out it was. Our first visit to the Kreuzberg and its kellers. First up, Roppelt's keller and a meet with some locals of Nick's acquaintance. Very friendly people, including a lady from Oberpfalz, with whom we shared some reminiscences of the local dialect. After a long day, it's a bit difficult to recall all the beers precisely but the Roppelt's kellerbier was pleasant without being outstanding. At this stage, J. was getting a bit concerned about the climb up the berg but we set out dauntless and found the climb little more than a pleasant stroll. First up, Rittmayer – I had the rauchbier, which was more akin to Spezial than Schlenkerla and most enjoyable. Next up, Lieberth, which we thought was the nicest of the kellers and more in tune with the surroundings. Again, a good beer that went well with a plate of chips and a chip butty – ask if you don't know. Nick had us well prepared for the final walk into Disneyland – sorry, the Brauhaus am Kreuzberg. I'm glad that we came here last because I think coming up from Hallerndorf and meeting this apparition on top of the mountain would have spoiled the day. It's hard to imagine how, in a country that takes both its traditions and environment seriously, someone managed to get planning permission to build this monstrosity. But, we were there for the beer and, to be honest, I didn't think it at all bad, even though Nick tipped nearly a seidla away in disgust! I can't remember them all in detail but I had nothing that I couldn't easily have drunk again. At this point, Nick departed on his bike to cook (!) dinner for his wife and we walked down the hill towards Hallerndorf – a beautiful stroll in the evening sunshine. A perfect day ended when the driver of 265 bus stopped for us between stops, saving us an hours wait. Very hospitable. So, thanks Nick for organising a great day out, everything worked (nearly) like clockwork and a great time was had. Hope to see you again before the holiday is over. Slainte! PS. Sure Jan won't object but I think the time is set because of his travel plans. We aim to be at Spezial at 12.30. |
