Das Wetter

Contrast to the USA's Pacific NW - we _are_ having a pretty mediocre summer. We've only rarely had genuinely summer-like temperatures so far (meaning sustained temps above 26.5 C/80 F); by that standard, we've "enjoyed" a whopping 78 minutes of "summer" this year. We're an anomalous zone though. In Flyover Country, they're drowning in misery. Not only are the temps pushing 40 C/104 F, but there was a fair bit of flooding recently, so the ground has been thoroughly saturated. All that translates into punishing levels of humidity, pushing heat indexes up to crazy levels, in some instances equivalent to 46 C! I'll take extended cloudy grayness and cool-ish temps over that, any day. One of the good things about an extended journey anywhere is the you feel more like you can just go with the flow. We've had all sorts of weirdness happen on trips past; a few years ago, a strap on one of the wife's sandals broke, so we wound up making a day's worth of shopping missions to find the replacement. We were successful, no complaints, and it became just another story to tell along the way.
