Falkenburg - at last!

We finally made it to the nearby zoigl town of Falkenburg yesterday, thanks to our hospitable host, 'Charly' Kellermann. Sadly, the afternoon weather was poor, so we didn't manage much sightseeing, only a quick look at the Schloss, closed for renovations, and a peek inside the 12th century Gestatte, Rote Ochse, which was pretty impressive in a run-down kind of way. We saw the outside of the new Schwoazangele z/s and also Wolf-fadl before heading for Kramer around 3 pm. I liked the bar, particularly the display of old musical instruments and the service was friendly. There was a scattering of other customers but the main event was a wedding, which was taking place in the banquet room. Amid keen anticipation, our zoigl arrived! First sips were not too devastating, rather over gassy (not just our opinion but life-long resident of Eschawo and enthusiastic zoigl drinker, Charly). Once the fizziness had settled down a bit, the taste was ok but not exceptional, in fact, not unlike many of the Eschawo types, probably a 70/30 Pils/Munch malt mixture and not particularly highly hopped. Our obatzenbrot was poorish, quite small portion and too many onions to really get the taste. As the afternoon progressed, the room got very full, particularly with groups of cyclists and walkers, probably off the nearby Waldnaabtal trail. After exchanging greetings with the stubewirt, we left, passing the large brauhaus on the way out of town. My view? Worth a visit, as the town is quite quaint and must be even better on a good day. The zoigl? ok but nothing exceptional. Hopefully, next time, we will get to visit the other two stube. Postscript: in the evening, we went with Charly to Beim Binner. Robert was in usual convivial and generous mood (didn't charge us for two pfiffs). We all agreed that the zoigl was much better than in Kramer, not so gassy, and much more hoppy. Intersting conversation with Charly and Martin Popp (Beim Gloser). Apparently, Martin's son, who does the brewing, is now working full-time for Gambrinus of Weiden, who, according to Charly, are a really antiquainted and quite run-down outfit. Neither had actually sampled their beer, although Charly maintains their elevator! The younger Popp will receive a 20-litre allowance, so Martin will eventually get to sample their wares. All in all, an interesting day.
