Cost savings is a part of it, but there's more to it than just that. A FeWo is not a hotel, and not a B&B. The English term is "self-catering accomodation." A FeWo (Ferienwohnung, or "vacation apartment") is simply a short-term rental accomodation of a living space that can be anything from a simple one-room studio apartment all the way up to a full-fledged multi-bedroom living space. My last one, which I've rented on two different occasions, was a very nicely fitted 1100 square-foot two-bedroom apartment. It had full bath and a half-bath (toilet and sink only), full kitchen, dining area, and living room. At one point, we had four people there, and enough space for all; it was even more room for just the two of us. Rent was 38 euro/night, but we got a discount because we rented it for four weeks. In effect, we had a home-away-from-home, with all the comforts of a home environment. We stocked the fridge (and the coffemaker) from the very nearby Aldi supermarket, had a local brewpub to walk to, and for road trips, had good access to major roads and the Autobahn network. The neighborhood was quiet, and the house owners were pleasant, helpful, and friendly. Parking was never a problem. We could take short overnight trips away and not be too concerned about the cost, and we could also take nothing more than a small overnight bag, rather than dragging all our luggage everywhere. Not a hotel hater by any means, but as far as the whole FeWo idea goes, color me very very sold. Probably the only better thing might be to exchange homes with someone in the region, or in a city like Vienna.
